Back Door Security
The security of your back door is as important as front door security. Often burglars will try to gain access through the back door, where they are out of site and can work on gaining access with less chances of being spotted. A qualified London locksmith will be able to offer more advice on the appropriate measures for the security of your back door.
Back Door Lock
Although many insurance companies will not insist that back doors meet British Standard 3621, the general recommendation is a for a 5 lever 2 bolt mortice sash lock with a handle, located halfway up the door. A sash lock is a lock specifically designed for doors fitted with glass panes. The sash lock should be bolstered by mortice rack bolts. Ask a residential locksmith exactly how these should be fitted.
Sash Lock
In addition a sash lock, the recommendation is for mortice rack bolts. They should be fitted into the wood, about 6" from the top and bottom of the door, so that they can be opened and closed from the inside. Another option is surface-mounted locking bolts that are fitted to the top and bottom of the door. It is very important that surface mounted locking bolts are fitted at 90 degrees to the grain of the wood, to prevent the wood from splitting if the door is pushed with force from the outside.
Back Door
If your back door does have glass panels, they should be laminated and fitted from the inside to prevent the putty from being removed. An additional option that will further improve security is to fit grilles to the inside of the glass panels. For more information ask a London locksmith.
