Protecting yourself from burglars and thieves by yourself isn't always your best and wisest bet, but you may want to take the right precautions regardless to whether you are going to invest in a home security system or not. 1. Always lock your door, no matter of how short is your stay out. So many homes have been broken into by people simply walking through an unlocked door.
2. If a stranger knocks on your door asking to use the phone to call car service or the police, don't let them in. Make the call yourself and keep them out.
3. Think like burglar. Try to see if you will be able to break into your own home and find the security leaks unseen to the regular eye.
If you ever lose your keys, don't wait - get your locks replaced ASAP.
4. Make sure your alarm is working well. If it goes off often, get it fixed! Let your neighbors know you've repaired it so when it's the real deal, your alarm doesn't go unnoticed.
5. Never keep a spare key under the doormat (or worse, in a mailbox). Bury it safely in a hidden spot that's not too obvious.
6. Don't keep your entrance to your home dark. A lightning system with infrared detection will keep most burglars off your property.
7. When putting your name on your mailbox or in the telephone book, use your initials and your surname - never your full name.
8. Consider getting a deterring or noisy dog - even a small and loud dog can do the trick, as thieves are not big fans of barks and attention.
9. When moving into a new house or apartment, always remember to change all the locks. You can never know a former owner (or their renters) well enough.
