The Benefits of Master Re-Keying

Master rekeying

A master key is a key specifically designed to open a set of locks. A change key is a key designed to open one lock within the set. Locksmiths accomplish this by placing two mechanisms within the lock. One mechanism is common to every lock in the set. The other mechanism is unique to each individual lock in the set. These systems range from basic master key systems to complex configurations that employ grandmaster keys and multiple master keys.

Circumstances arise that require the locks to be changed. New owners may want to change the locks on their home or a business may change the locks after they terminate an employee. Non-locksmiths often associate changing locks with replacing the entire mechanism. However, when it comes to pin and tumbler locks rekeying is a common and cost-effective alternative to replacement.

Rekeying is the process of altering the lock’s internal pin configuration. After resetting the tumbler combinations to fit a different key, the old keys no longer function. When rekeying a lock, the locksmith can change the master mechanism, the change mechanism, or both mechanisms. This allows a locksmith to change the master key for a building while allowing some or all of the change keys to remain the same. Alternatively, the locksmith can alter one or some of the change locks without interfering with the current master.

There are many benefits to rekeying compared to changing the locks. The obvious and prominent of these benefits is cost. The homeowner or business owner does not have to pay for new hardware only the cost of the service and the new keys. Another benefit is practicality in terms of both time and logistics. It is a much simpler, quicker process for a professional locksmith to come into your business and rekey the locks than it is for them to replace all of the hardware.

Owners should seriously consider a system that a locksmith can rekey if they do not have one. Consider the peace of mind that this new system will bring. Many homes, in particular, have lock systems that are available in any retail store. These locks are not unique and therefore do not require a great deal of skill to open.
