Many are surprised to find out that Britain has some of the worst crime statistics in all of the European Union. With such a high concentration of people, London is unfortunately the focal point for a great portion of Britain’s crime.
According to analysis carried out by the Conservative Party, Britain has a higher violent crime rate than that of the US and all of the other countries in Europe. In terms of overall crime, Britain came in at a close second to Sweden. With a murder rate of 1.49 people for every 100,000, Britain comes in at 13th for Europe, a superior ranking to that of Spain, Italy and France.
Rounding off these damning figures are Britain’s statistics as regards burglaries. The figures on burglary ranked Britain fourth behind Denmark, Belgium and Holland in 2007. However, with 304,881 burglaries committed all together; Britain had the greatest number of reported burglaries in all of Europe.
As a result of the surprisingly high crime rates in Britain, police have significantly improved their tactics outside of London. An unfortunate bi-product of these improved tactics outside of London is that they have driven criminals towards the capital and its suburban boroughs in particular. The levels of burglaries in London and the surrounding areas have surged with an embarrassing 12.7% increase from 2008/2009.
The rate of violent crimes in London has remained more or less the same or dropped somewhat over the past couple of years. The number of homicides in London saw a high of 204 homicides in 2003/2004 and has been dropping at a fairly constant rate to 2008/2009 where it rested at 148, a 27% drop over 5 years.
Assault with injury, defined by the Metropolitan Police as assault occasioning actual bodily harm and grievous bodily harm, roughly accounts for 40% of all of the violence against persons in the jurisdiction of the Metropolitan Police. In 2008/2009, there were an incredible 70,962 assaults that resulted in injury reported in London. This works out to 9.5 people being assaulted for every 1,000 residents or almost 1% of all London’s residents. In 2007/2008, the figures were almost identical as in 2008/2009; however, they were down approximately 9% from 2005/2006.
The number of robbery offences in London have seen a marked decrease in number over the past two years. In 2006/2007, there were 45,771 reported cases of robbery in London or approximately 6.1 robberies for every 1,000 residents. Last year, there were 32,555 reported cases of robbery in London or approximately 4.3 robberies for every 1,000 residents. This indicates a 30% decrease in the number of recorded robberies over a two year period.
As hard as it might be to believe, London is the capitol of one of the most crime ridden cities in all of Europe. As such, it is of the utmost importance that residents of London and its surrounding area take every necessary precaution in order to avoid becoming a victim. At the very minimum, people should take steps towards securing their homes. Always locksmith is the most trusted provider of commercial and residential security in London and the greater London area.
