The Difference Between Re-Keying a Lock and Changing a Lock

Re-keying a lock may be necessary in the event of lost keys or if the individual just wishes to replace the keys for security purposes. Certainly, if moving into a new residence, it would be prudent to have all the home's locks re-keyed (or replaced) at that time to ensure that no person who is not authorized to do so can gain entry.

Since having duplicate keys made is a relatively simple procedure, and even if all keys are believed to be accounted for at the time of the home's transfer from one occupant to another, it is advisable to have all locks re-keyed or replaced to ensure the security of the home's new occupants and their belongings. If the locks are all in working order, having them re-keyed may be all that is necessary.

The re-keying procedure involves the locksmith making new keys for the existing lock and then altering the mechanism within the lock so that only the new keys will work for that particular lock. One advantage to having the lock re-keyed is that it is possible to have all the locks in the home re-keyed so the same key can be used for each lock. This is a nice option for those with a number of locks and who don't wish to have to sort through a lot of keys trying to find the right one for the right lock.

To change or replace a lock means just that - removing the existing lock from the door and replacing it with a new one. This would be necessary if the lock is damaged or defective, making replacing the entire system necessary.

Most locksmiths provide a mobile service and will come to the location of the lock or locks needing to be re-keyed or replaced. In some cases, it may be possible to remove the lock and take it directly to a locksmith, possibly avoiding some expense associated with a "house call."

To re-key or to replace? The safety and security of a home's occupants should be the primary objective in deciding whether it would be better to simply re-key existing systems or to replace possibly defective ones.
