Locksmiths and insurance companies recommend deadbolt locks. Doorknob locks are easy to open if a person, such as a burglar, desires to do so. Deadbolt locks represent added security. They also act as a deterrent. When a burglar becomes aware of the deadbolt, he usually moves on to another house, as the ways to dislodge a deadbolt are extremely noisy.
Ways to open a deadbolt lock:
• A deadbolt can be opened with the key.
• The door can be pried off its hinges.
• The door itself can be smashed in.
• Deadbolts can be drilled out of the door.
• A skilled burglar can pick even a deadbolt lock.
Added safety measures:
• Putting deadbolts on “out of the way” doors make it difficult for someone to break into your home in a less obvious location.
• Make certain that house keys are not on your keychain when left with a contractor or auto mechanic.
• Never give house keys to a young child or to an irresponsible teen.
• Use high security strike plates. This is added protection for any type of lock. The strike plate behind the lock is generally the weakest part of the door.
• Always use a “trusted” locksmith.
• Get keys duplicated by someone who is trustworthy.
• Make certain that the length of the bolt itself is at least 1 inch long.
• When inside the house, leave your key turned and inside the lock. This makes the lock less accessible for the burglar.
If you intend to use a contractor, a housekeeper or cleaning service that will have your key for an extended period, consider using locks where the keys cannot be duplicated.
